The African philanthropy sector is thriving: East Africa giving report

August 27, 2022

Deep roots of traditional giving in Africa have evolved significantly in recent years from a largely informal nature to an organised shape practised in different forms and guided more and more by institutional philanthropy, finds ‘The State of Institutional Philanthropy in East Africa’, a bi-annual report produced by the East Africa Philanthropy Network.

The report looks specifically at institutions that are promoting local giving practices – from community-based entities, family-owned, to private social entities. The research also demonstrates the growing wealth of information and knowledge on local giving in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Some of the report’s conclusions are:

  • There is a need for established legal frameworks at the national level for guiding giving practices
  • Technology plays a critical role in emerging giving practices
  • Recognising the power of communities is essential to a strong future of philanthropy
  • Philanthropy must invest in partnerships and collaborations
